Danielle Galloway, a resident, describes the impact of these activities, stating, 'I've seen plenty of fights in the middle of the night, just a lot of kids walking up and down the street, yelling, screaming.' Rosalynn Simmons, another resident, adds, 'They're speeding. They have Uber's everywhere. They're yelling. There's drunk kids coming up and down the street. They're throwing up, someone peed on my car a few weeks ago.'
The concerns are not limited to noise; residents also report incidents of harassment and even a reported threat. Police records detail a series of responses, including citations for excessively loud music and disputes. One incident on April 26 involved officers responding to a home blaring Frank Sinatra's 'New York, New York' just after 3 a.m., highlighting the persistent nature of the problem.
The landlords of these rental properties are under scrutiny for not effectively controlling their renters. Despite the concerns, Villanova University's Director of Public Relations, Krissy Woods, emphasizes the university's commitment to working with students to understand the importance of being good neighbors. However, residents feel their concerns are not being adequately addressed.
The situation is expected to worsen with Villanova's plans to open a new campus at the former site of Cabrini University. Residents worry that the university's response will not improve, and they fear the issues will intensify. The NAACP Main Line Branch is researching the situation but has not yet issued a formal statement.
Galloway expresses a desire for stronger action from the township and police, stating, 'On the weekends, they need to patrol more and they don't.' Residents believe that open communication and a mutual understanding of expectations could help alleviate the tensions between the university and the community.
