Power Outages Hit Whatcom County: Over 3,000 Residents Affected (2026)

Power outages hit Whatcom County with hundreds affected after a windy overnight. But here's where it gets controversial: are frequent storm-related outages a warning sign of aging infrastructure or a predictable consequence of seasonal weather shifts?

EVERS, Wash.— Overnight winds knocked out power for many residents across Whatcom County, according to Puget Sound Energy (PSE). The interruptions ranged from small outages to wide-spread outages, still being tallied as crews assess the damage.

As of 8 a.m. Monday, December 15, 2025, PSE reported 3,674 customer addresses without service.

A single outage event stretched across the Lummi Peninsula and Lummi Island, accounting for 2,569 affected locations.

Gusts exceeding 45 mph were recorded in several areas. In many cases, the outages were attributed to downed trees or vegetation impacting lines.

Why this matters: with wind events increasing in frequency in many regions, residents should review emergency prep steps, understand how to report outages quickly, and consider weather-driven power reliability when planning for the week ahead.

And this is the part most people miss: even when power returns quickly, the damage to equipment and the risk of subsequent outages can linger. What changes should utilities prioritize—hardening lines, pruning vegetation, or upgrading grid infrastructure—to reduce future outages? Share your thoughts in the comments.
