A New Chapter Unfolds: Michael Bradley Takes the Helm at Red Bull New York!
Red Bull New York has just announced a monumental shift, naming former USMNT and MLS legend Michael Bradley as their new head coach. This move marks a significant transition for the club, and the soccer world is buzzing with anticipation.
Bradley's appointment comes after a successful stint with the club's MLS NEXT Pro team, New York Red Bulls II, where he secured the 2025 MLS NEXT Pro title. This experience has undoubtedly prepared him for the challenges ahead. But here's where it gets interesting: He's stepping into a role previously held by Sandro Schwarz, who departed in October after the team missed the 2025 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, ending their impressive 15-year postseason streak. This is a big deal!
Adding to the changes, Jochen Schneider, the Head of Sport, has also left the club, with Julian de Guzman taking over. De Guzman expressed his excitement about Bradley's appointment, highlighting his exceptional playing career and promising coaching future. He emphasized Bradley's ability to connect with people and his vision for the team's success.
With a new era dawning, Bradley is tasked with ushering in a "fresh beginning" for RBNY in 2026, aiming to evolve beyond the classic Red Bull pressing style. This includes a squad refresh, including the departure of goalkeeper Carlos Coronel after five seasons, and the team will need to fill a third and final DP spot during the winter transfer window. The team still has key players like Emil Forsberg and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.
Bradley himself is enthusiastic about the opportunity, stating his excitement to lead the club where his professional career began. He started his playing career in 2004 with New York (then the MetroStars) at the young age of 16, marking the beginning of a remarkable 20-year journey. He played in nearly 600 professional matches across MLS and top leagues in the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, and England. During his time in Europe, he played for prestigious clubs like AS Roma, Aston Villa, and Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Upon his return to MLS, Bradley led Toronto FC to a historic treble in 2017, winning the MLS Cup, Supporters' Shield, and Canadian Championship alongside Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco. He retired after the 2023 season. Bradley's impact on the USMNT is undeniable, with 151 caps, the third-most in program history. He also played in the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups.
Adding a layer of family history, Bradley's coaching journey began in 2023 as an assistant under his father, Bob Bradley, at Norwegian side Stabæk. Bob, who coached New York from 2002-05, is widely regarded as one of the greatest American soccer coaches.
