This episode, titled "Series Acclimation Mil," takes viewers on an emotional journey with Sam, a holographic student and an Emissary for Kasq, as she embarks on a quest for self-discovery. A significant part of her journey involves unraveling one of Star Trek’s most profound mysteries: the fate of Captain Sisko following the events depicted in Deep Space Nine.
Sam's determination leads her to explore the circumstances surrounding Sisko, who is classified by Starfleet as Missing in Action due to his body never being recovered during a critical mission on Bajor. According to Noga Landau, the executive producer of the series, this episode serves not only as a tribute to Deep Space Nine but also as an homage to the actor Avery Brooks, who portrayed the much-loved Captain Sisko.
While Brooks does not physically appear in this installment of Starfleet Academy, the climax of the episode features a poignant voice cameo from him. This occurs after an emotionally resonant interaction between Sam and Cirroc Lofton's character, Jake Sisko. The episode concludes with a powerful line delivered by Brooks's voice, which underscores the depth of understanding that love brings:
"Divine laws are simpler than human ones, which is why it takes a lifetime to be able to understand them. Only love can understand them. Only love can interpret these words as they were meant to be interpreted."
Though this episode does not fully clarify Sisko's ambiguous fate, it acknowledges the enigma surrounding his character while honoring his legacy and celebrating his role as an Emissary. So, how did Starfleet Academy manage to incorporate this unexpected voiceover?
Interestingly, Avery Brooks did not record new lines for this episode, nor was modern AI technology employed to create the dialogue. Instead, the memorable line stems from Brooks's spoken word album entitled Here. Tawny Newsome, a writer for the series, explained that this private recording was graciously permitted for use by Brooks himself. She expressed her gratitude, recalling how anxious she felt making the request, given Brooks's immense contributions to the franchise over the years.
"We needed some sign at the end that he had heard [SAM]," Newsome clarified. "He very graciously allowed us to have this. The studio team, including Noga and Alex, along with Aaron Baiers, moved mountains to make this happen, and I couldn’t be more thankful."
In a separate discussion with Screen Rant, executive producer Noga Landau elaborated on Cirroc Lofton’s crucial role in obtaining Brooks's approval. Lofton suggested using a recording of Brooks's voice, emphasizing the importance of honoring both the character of Sisko and the actor himself through their collaboration.
"From the very beginning, we knew that the best way to pay tribute to Sisko and to Mr. Brooks was to secure his blessing and involvement in whatever form he desired," Newsome said. "Thanks to Cirroc’s relationship with Mr. Brooks, it was his idea to utilize this particular recording, which I’ll let him elaborate on."
Cirroc Lofton reflected on his inspiration for this decision, stating, "I thought it would be fantastic to feature this album he recorded called 'Here...' It’s a beautiful jazz album that I enjoy listening to regularly. I thought, ‘Can we incorporate this into the episode?’ So, Tawny and I collaborated, and I handed her my CD, encouraging her to explore this idea further."
Newsome also remarked that Cirroc deserves credit as an executive producer for his significant contributions to bringing this moment to fruition.
