In a recent Senate hearing, Republican Senators took Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos to task over what they termed as the streaming giant’s promotion of "woke propaganda" amidst its pursuit to merge with Warner Bros. This high-stakes discussion revolved around Netflix's plan to acquire the film and streaming segments of Warner Bros., with Senate Republicans asserting that the platform leans heavily towards leftist ideologies and engages in promoting progressive narratives.
Ted Sarandos, usually composed, appeared noticeably shaken as he faced a series of tough inquiries regarding the GOP's familiar concerns about representation, political bias, and how transgender issues are depicted in media. This grilling occurred before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy, and Consumer Rights, which added an extra layer of intensity to the proceedings.
Senator Ted Cruz from Texas made accusations that Netflix has long embraced a left-leaning agenda, using last Sunday's Grammy Awards as an example of politically charged content, which aired on CBS, a network belonging to competitor Paramount Skydance—who is also vying to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, although their recent bid was rejected by Warner Bros. shareholders.
Cruz pointed to Reed Hastings, co-founder of Netflix, as a significant contributor to Democratic causes, prompting him to question how viewers could trust that the merger between Netflix and Warner Bros. wouldn’t turn the two into a united front for political propaganda. He expressed concern for existing news outlets like CNN, which he criticized as lacking objectivity or journalistic integrity.
In response, Sarandos emphasized that Netflix's primary focus is entertainment, arguing that viewers log on to enjoy content rather than engage with any political agenda, a misstep that he claimed would be detrimental to the business.
The senators did not let up, however. Missouri Republicans Josh Hawley and Eric Schmitt joined in, with Schmitt claiming that Netflix's current offerings heavily reflect a "woke" agenda that doesn’t align with mainstream American preferences. He criticized the platform for what he described as a practice of 'race swapping' characters, whether historical figures or fictional roles.
Hawley raised another contentious issue by questioning why Netflix features children’s programming that, according to him, promotes transgender ideologies. Sarandos defended the company by stating that Netflix provides diverse programming catering to a wide range of audiences across the political spectrum. He reassured the senators that Netflix equips parents with sophisticated tools to control what their children can access on the platform.
Despite the challenging questions, Sarandos found moments to offer praise, particularly noting that he believes President Trump’s critique of the proposed $83 billion merger is legitimate. He remarked that Trump has consistently shown interest in safeguarding American jobs, expressing confidence that the deal would ultimately prove its worth.
Interestingly, Trump seemed to express support for Paramount Skydance's ambitions in acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery, especially after their aggressive $108.4 billion bid in December. He suggested that any deal should include commitments to reform CNN, implying that the current leadership of the network is not fit to continue.
