Eminent Scholars Honored: A Controversial Decision?
Dhaka University (DU) has bestowed the esteemed title of emeritus professors upon four renowned academicians, a move that has sparked curiosity and debate.
The four esteemed individuals are Prof. Anwarullah Chowdhury and Prof. AFM Yusuf Haider, both former vice-chancellors of DU, Prof. Tajmeri SA Islam, a former dean of the science faculty, and Prof. Choudhury Mahmood Hasan, a former dean of the pharmacy faculty.
Rafiqul Islam Panna, the acting director of DU's Public Relations Office, confirmed this development, stating that it was a decision made by the university syndicate based on a recommendation from the Academic Council.
But here's where it gets interesting: these professors will continue to be affiliated with their respective departments, offering guidance on academic matters and contributing to the overall growth of education, research, and innovation at DU. However, they will not have access to university housing, a point that has raised some eyebrows.
In addition to their advisory roles, the emeritus professors will retain certain privileges, such as access to the university library for research and publications, secretarial support, and medical facilities.
This decision has sparked a debate among academics and students alike. Some argue that it is a well-deserved honor for these scholars, recognizing their invaluable contributions to the university. Others question the need for such a title and the associated privileges, especially when it comes to housing.
And this is the part most people miss: the controversy lies not just in the title itself but in the interpretation of its implications. Does it suggest that these professors are still actively involved in shaping the university's future, or is it merely a symbolic gesture?
What are your thoughts? Do you think this decision is a fitting tribute to their legacy, or is it a step too far? Feel free to share your opinions in the comments below and join the discussion!
