Hours later, he was found dead after falling from a hotel balcony. Was this a preventable tragedy, or a heartbreaking accident?
The inquest at Avon Coroner’s Court revealed troubling details. Mr. Cole became upset when Ms. Rees insisted on ordering the most expensive meal, which he refused to pay for. The situation worsened when Ms. Rees later texted him, criticizing his behavior and refusing to support him. She also mentioned feeling uncomfortable when Mr. Cole referred to her as his girlfriend during the dinner. Is this a case of a carer failing to provide emotional support, or a complex situation where boundaries were blurred?
Later that evening, Ms. Rees checked on Mr. Cole at his hotel room, and he assured her he was ‘fine.’ But the most chilling detail emerged after his death: Mr. Cole’s final message to Laura Warrant, a manager at the care company. He wrote, ‘I’m going to jump now. You can tell everyone I love them, especially my mum.’ Ms. Warrant’s response? ‘Stop being silly’ and ‘get some rest.’ Did this dismissive reply miss a critical opportunity to intervene?
Coroner Dr. Peter Harrowing described Mr. Cole as an ‘extremely anxious young man’ who needed constant reassurance. While he criticized Ms. Warrant’s response for potentially aggravating the situation, he didn’t find ‘gross failures’ in the care provided. Lifestyle has since implemented an improvement plan, which Dr. Harrowing deemed satisfactory. But is this enough to prevent similar tragedies in the future?
