Circle Centre Mall Closes: Saying Goodbye to a Shopping Icon (2026)

As we bid adieu to Circle Centre, a beloved landmark in Indianapolis, the mall officially shut its doors for the last time on Wednesday evening.

Once hailed as a vibrant hub for shopping and socializing, Circle Centre Mall first opened its doors in 1995 amid much excitement. However, over the past decade, it has unfortunately experienced a significant decline. In late 2021, Simon Malls sold their remaining stake in the property, and the current owner, Hendricks Commercial Properties, is now set to undertake a substantial transformation of the site.

In the weeks leading up to its closure, the mall resembled more of a museum than a bustling shopping center. Many visitors have made the trip to capture one final glimpse of the towering four-story structure that once buzzed with activity.

This bittersweet moment has attracted residents of Indianapolis who wish to reminisce about the countless weekends spent at this iconic location. Jamie Scott-Massey, who brought her daughter and niece for a visit, reflects on the significance of the mall for her generation, noting, "A lot of Friday nights spent here with my friends. I’m trying to explain to them that there was a time when 12 and 13-year-olds could roam freely in a mall." This sentiment encapsulates the nostalgia felt by many.

However, the reality today is starkly different. Many storefronts and food court eateries sit empty, evoking an almost post-apocalyptic atmosphere. Raul Desai, an employee from a nearby office, reflected on the mall's former vibrancy: "There were so many people here interacting and enjoying each other's company. Now it feels like an abandoned space."

Ashley Marino, who visited soon after the mall’s opening 30 years ago, shared her emotional connection to the place. "It opened when I was around 14 or 15. During my college years at IUPUI, I spent a lot of time here. I just wanted to come down and see it one last time," she expressed. Accompanied by her daughter, they strolled through the mall, revisiting old stores and reliving cherished memories. Unfortunately, she noted how disheartening it is to witness the once lively atmosphere turn so desolate. "It’s surreal," she said. "We were here a few months ago when there were still some shops open, but now it’s just really sad to see it like this."

The closure of Circle Centre is paving the way for an exciting new development called "Traction Yards." This project aims to create a modern open-air, mixed-use environment. Construction has already begun, with sections of the mall being closed off for the work ahead.

City officials have announced that the redevelopment will unfold in several phases, with the first major phase expected to be completed by 2029. This initial phase will include:
* 400,000 square feet dedicated to retail, dining, and entertainment options

* 100,000 square feet of office space

* Over 300 residential units

* Inviting public plazas and green spaces

During the transition, businesses that face the exterior will remain open, allowing some continuity for shoppers.

As the shops within the mall began packing up weeks prior, many are preparing to move on. As we close the chapter on 2025 and welcome a new year filled with hopes and resolutions, the two city blocks housing Circle Centre are also poised for a fresh start, promising a new aesthetic and a vibrant space for future memories.
