After more than two years of anticipation and a hefty investment of $25 million, the Aquarena is finally set to welcome back the public.
Exciting News for Swimmers!
Starting next week, this beloved facility will reopen its doors to everyone. On Wednesday, members of local swim clubs were given the exciting opportunity to jump back into the water at the freshly revamped venue.
Nathan Wilson from the St. John's Legends swim club expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "It feels fantastic to return to this expansive space. We’ve been waiting for such a long time, and it’s truly significant for all of us to be back here."
The Aquarena had been closed for renovations in preparation for the 2025 Canada Games, marking its original construction for the same event back in 1977. Following the initial reopening for the Games, the facility underwent further upgrades before finally being ready for public use.
A Special First Dive
On Wednesday, local swim teams were honored to be the first to make a splash in the newly renovated pool, signaling the upcoming return to general public access. However, it's important to note that not all amenities within the facility are operational just yet. Craig Neil, the general manager of The Works, shared with CBC News that while swim clubs are back in action, lane swims, lessons, and other activities for the public will commence next week.
"It’s thrilling and exactly what we hoped for. Seeing the athletes in the pool this morning was a wonderful sight," Neil stated enthusiastically.
Among the numerous renovations completed is a modern one-meter diving tower, an upgraded timing system, and family change rooms designed to be fully accessible. Additionally, Neil mentioned the introduction of a brand new waterslide, albeit a smaller version than what used to be there.
What’s Still on the Way?
While some features like saunas and hot tubs are still a couple of months away from being available, visitors can also look forward to the reopening of the Tim Hortons located within The Works.
Neil emphasized the long-standing community connection to the Aquarena and fitness center, stating, "This facility has been a staple for a long time, and I believe people feel a strong attachment to it. I’m confident it will draw them back in droves."
As we prepare for the grand reopening, many displaced athletes are eagerly waiting for the final touches to be completed by spring. What are your thoughts on the renovations? Are you excited to dive back into the Aquarena? Share your opinions in the comments!
